I think my main takeaway from our weekend in New York City is how boring my cold weather wardrobe is. Kidding! Mostly. You will notice that I look the same in every picture because of my jacket and hat, with the exception of the pics taken on our way out to dinner Saturday night. So I apologize in advance for my repetitive look. Ha.
We flew out of San Francisco on Friday, and I immediately remembered why we never fly out of that airport. It enabled us to get a direct flight, but there were so many delays that it offset the benefit. We left almost two hours late! The boys were amazing travelers. Our friends brought us dinner as soon as we arrived. It was the perfect way to get settled on our first night!
Saturday we were all tired from the long day of travel, so it was a pretty mellow day. It was perfect to spend time with our friends and catch up on what’s been going on in one another’s lives. My husband and the boys went to watch one of our friends’ daughters in her first baseball game of the season. They enjoyed the outing in spite of the blustery weather. That night we had dinner at a restaurant called DaDong, which is known for its Peking duck. Duck isn’t something that I usually order (steak is my fave!), but it was delicious! It came with a bunch of sides and they gave us suggestions on how to pair the different sides with the meat. We met another friend that we’ve known since we all lived in San Francisco, and it was a delightful evening.
Sunday we focused on activities that let us cover a lot of ground and see the city in a few different ways. We took the tram to Roosevelt Island, which is like riding a giant ski gondola. After having pizza for lunch (a requirement in NYC!), we took the Staten Island ferry so that we could see the Statue of Liberty. It was great to see the skyline from so many different angles! After we got off the ferry, we walked to the Freedom Tower and the 9/11 Memorial. We had to stop for coffee on the way, naturally. The last time we were at ground zero, it was about 18 months after 9/11 and nothing had happened to the site. The Memorial is beautiful and I’m glad we got to experience it.
Monday was our last day and we had just a few hours before heading to the airport. The boys wanted to see a few of the most iconic landmarks. We saw Times Square, the Empire State building, Bryant Park, and Central Park. By the time we got back from that, we had to head to the airport! The weekend in New York City passed much too quickly, which is the sign of a great vacation! I’m thankful to have almost all of spring break ahead of us now that we are home. It feels like we got the best of both worlds!
