My mother in law’s birthday was last week, and since it was a milestone birthday, she invited us to Sacramento to celebrate. My in laws don’t actually live in Sacramento, but Old Town is a favorite spot of theirs, so we headed there on Saturday. Our original plan was to take the train, as Amtrak goes right to Old Town and the boys would have enjoyed the adventure. However, plans changed and we were only able to go for one night, so we decided to drive and make the most of our short time away. We stopped for lunch at Dos Coyotes, our fave Mexican restaurant in Davis.
We stayed north of Old Town, and if I had to do it again, I would stay closer in. The hotel wasn’t close enough to Old Town to walk, especially for the boys. The meters in Old Town have a two hour limit until 10pm, even on Sundays. As a result, we had to pay for parking both days, which would have partially offset the increased cost of a room in a better location.
Dinner Saturday night at the Rio City Cafe was fun, and the location was beautiful. The food is a bit overpriced for the quality, which I’ve found to be common in touristy areas, but watching the sun set over the river was amazing! The rain from earlier in the day had cleared up, and it was a beautiful evening. We surprised my mother in law with a cake, and she seemed to really enjoy everyone being together to celebrate.
Our favorite part of the weekend was the Railroad Musuem. I remember going there as a child on a school field trip, and I’ve wanted to go back ever since. It was so much fun! If we lived closer, a membership would be a great investment or gift. We went on Sunday and it was busy, but not nearly as busy as we had feared. The boys loved being able to go inside some of the train cars, and there’s even a simulator that allows you to be the conductor. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you live in the area.
