If you saw my video unboxing on Facebook, you know that I received an order from Stitch Fix this week. I think the concept of Stitch Fix is ingenious. You place the order, and someone else does the hard work of going shopping! Even if you like shopping, it can be frustrating to find pieces that will work with what you already own, and even harder to put cohesive outfits together. I like that Stitch Fix not only does the shopping, but they include a styling card showing two different ways each of the five pieces can be worn. Want to try it for yourself? Sign up here. Ready to dive in? Let’s take a look at part one of my Stitch Fix review.
I ended up with a ton of photos, so I decided to break the five pieces into two posts. Although you don’t have to make any specific requests when you place your order, I requested colored jeans and a fun top as a potential holiday outfit, and also a date night dress. You are able to enter a price range for every category when you set up your profile, so you don’t need to worry that they will break the bank with what they send you.
First up in my box was a grey cold shoulder sweater dress. I wrote a post about a cold shoulder top here, and I specifically said that I wasn’t sure about the functionality of a cold shoulder sweater because wouldn’t you want your shoulders covered when it’s chilly outside? Well, I can now tell you from experience that this didn’t turn out to be a problem for me. Granted this dress, with a three quarter sleeve, obviously isn’t intended to be worn on the coldest of days, but the fabric was warm and cozy and I was very comfortable the entire time of our photo shoot. I mentioned in the unboxing video that I might style the dress with tall black boots. However, the tall black boots that I own are chunky riding boots by Frye, so I decided that they would be too heavy for the dress. Instead I opted for an ankle bootie, but the dress would look cute with tall boots if I had a more streamlined, slimmer pair in my closet.
The fit on the dress was fantastic. I worry about sweater dresses being clingy and unflattering, but the A line cut of this one meant it didn’t cling anywhere I didn’t want it to, and it was flattering and easy to wear. The overall length was good, which is sometimes an issue for me at 5’7″, and I liked the color. What I wasn’t sold on was the fabric trim. I am not sure quite how to explain it, but it didn’t feel like me. It looked better than I thought when I was reviewing the pictures, but I don’t know that it would be something I would reach for in my closet. The dress is by THML, which is a brand they carry at Nordstrom, and the price is $68.00. Verdict = return.
Next up is the Laju Farrid Split Back Top at $64.00. I love the blue and green color combo in this top, and I thought the split hem detailing in the back was a fun styling addition. However, when we were taking the photos of the back of the shirt, we noticed how the split lines up with the seam in the jeans and that wasn’t very flattering! The fabric is 100% rayon, which means it drapes nicely and will likely wash well. I find rayon easier to care for than cotton, because I’m able to smooth it out the fabric when it’s wet and it alleviates the need to iron. My cotton flannels aren’t so easy.
The styling card for this shirt showed it paired with mid wash denim and neutral flats. I decided my Steve Madden shoes would be neutral and also add some fun! I had one friend tell me she’s happy every time she sees these shoes. Isn’t that something fashion should do, bring joy to us and those around us??
In the end I decided to return the shirt because it’s just too big. The oversized look is definitely in style right now, but when I got home and put on my Rails flannel shirt I blogged about here, my husband commented on how much better fitting that shirt was. When I reviewed the photos of the Laju shirt, I saw that he was right. At the wrong angle it looked a bit like a maternity shirt. Great color and fabric, but not the fit I was going for. I got my typical size, a small, but I bet it would look a lot better in extra small. Stitch Fix does allow exchanges as long as they have the exact item you got in another size.
Last up today is a heathered grey long cardigan by RD Style. I was convinced this was a keeper. In my post about long cardigans a couple weeks ago, I specifically said I was looking for a grey, long cardigan. Again though, I’m not sure if this is too big? The fit was a bit boxier than I was expecting. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
I love the color of the sweater and it will go with absolutely everything. Since it is a bit oversized, the styling card shows it with a fitted top and skinny jeans. It also suggests wearing the cardigan over a flannel, but I didn’t like how you could see the bunched up sleeves under the sweater. This top is an old one from Nordstrom but has been a versatile piece for me for many years. I love the Kendra Scott necklace and yellow BP shoes to add color and visual interest.
I’m just not sure if the overall look is a bit sloppy. It seems a tad too wide across the shoulders. I’m on the fence about this piece. The price is $74.00. What do you think? Do you agree with my decisions so far? I will post the remaining pieces in a couple of days and look forward to getting your feedback about those too!

I have had trouble justifying some pricing from Stitch Fix, when I have found comparable items in similar materials at Walmart for under $20! (and I swear I wouldn’t normally shop there, but I was out of town and in a pinch for a cardigan). I agree, the shoulders seem wide on this item for you, but the sleeves too tight for anything under it!

Hahaha you never have to justify where you shop if you find something there you like! ;). Yes, you are right about the fit of the sweater. It would be harder to pair with things because of the narrow sleeve.

Hi Abby! I love the dress on you! It looks great! I see what ya mean about the split lining up with your jean seam. I also like the cardigan. It’s a little pricey, but if the quality is great, go for it! Love how you styled it! Loving all your posts! Keep up the good work!! So fun!
Xoxo,
Amy

Haha right? Not sure what pants you could wear with the blue shirt to avoid that awkward seam line up. Thanks for the feedback, and for your encouragement!!
