I have never been a fan of shaving. I feel like I can’t shave close enough for my liking, and I struggle with ingrown hairs and red bumps. Recently I started researching laser hair removal as a way to eliminate the need to shave altogether. While I was investigating my options, Skin Refine Med Spa in Sunnyvale reached out to see if I like to partner with them on a post about my experience with laser hair removal. Needless to say, the timing was perfect!
Laser hair removal typically requires 6-8 treatments, but each person is different in terms of how their body responds. Skin Refine uses the two technologies for its hair removal treatments, the Cynosure Palomar Icon and Cynosure Apogee Elite. This allows them to safely treat all skin types. The laser targets the hair follicles, destroying the active growth. Waxing, in contrast, removes the hair above the skin but does not affect or destroy the follicle, which is required for long term removal.
I started the process in March and have had three treatments so far. Let me tell you, I have been blown away by the results! I know that many of you may have questions about the process, so I thought I would share a bit about my experience with laser hair removal.
The process is almost painless
I first tried waxing several years ago when getting ready for a beach vacation. Oh my word does that hurt! And it doesn’t get better with time, at least in my experience. As you can see in the photo, the laser is a wand. The nurse will move the wand over the area you are treating, and each time the laser sends a signal, you feel the tiniest prick. I liken it to acupuncture, if you’ve ever tried that. The sensation is very small and virtually painless. Because of the size of the wand, the entire area can be treated in just a couple of minutes.
There is little to no maintenance required
Waxing and shaving, as you know, have to be done continuously because you are removing the hair, not interrupting the growth. Long term success of laser hair removal depends on your body and your hormones, and you may need occasional follow up treatments (once or twice a year, or less) in order to make sure the hair stays away. Compared to daily shaving or waxing every day, this is a no brainer for me! I suspect it will end up being cost effective as well.
No red bumps or reactions
My biggest complaint about waxing and shaving is that I often get an adverse reaction. I don’t think red bumps are any more attractive than hair, right?! And waxing is great initially but really never lasts as long as I hope it will. Oh and did I mention how much it hurts?!
If you’re in the Bay Area, I highly recommend scheduling a consultation with Skin Refine for all of your skincare needs. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you feel comfortable with each step of the process. There’s a reason they have so many amazing reviews on Yelp! Their specials change every month, so be sure to ask and tell them I sent you! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about my experience with laser hair removal!
