I get asked a lot about what pieces you should prioritize when building your wardrobe. I was thinking about my favorite purchases in 2019, and I realized that a lot of them are great wardrobe basics that would be staples in any closet! Many of these exact items are still available, and for those that are sold out, I was able to find something similar. In no particular order, here are my favorite purchases in 2019:
1. Snakeskin booties
Originally when I went to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I was torn between two styles. I already owned and loved this Jeffrey Campbell style in taupe, so I decided to branch out and try the Vince Camuto booties instead. Then I wound up buying them in a second color a few weeks ago when they went back on sale! I get compliments every time I wear them.
2. The coziest sweater
I cannot explain how comfortable this sweater is. It’s not too fitted, the neck isn’t too tight, and the yarn is just so so soft! Check out this post for more turtleneck outfit ideas. I own it in two colors and reach for them both all the time! And yep, these are the same booties again. I’m obsessed.
3. The most flattering ruched dress
What can I say, 3000 reviewers don’t lie! This dress is ruched in just the right places. While I don’t typically wear body con styles, I feel confident in this one, even without shape wear! I love that it can be worn casually or dressed up.
4. Lace Amazon dress
Honestly this lace dress is such a great value that it probably deserves a post of its own! In July we celebrated 20 years of marriage. Naturally, I wanted something new to wear to dinner! I didn’t plan ahead, though, so Amazon Prime came to my rescue. This dress is under $40, well rated, and looks so much more expensive than it is! I was very impressed. Now I just need to find another excuse to get dressed up!
5. A basic black t-shirt dress
I bought this for less than $20 on sale at Old Navy. I wanted something new for a spotaneous birthday dinner out, but I didn’t want to spend a lot either. The best thing about a t-shirt dress (sold out, linking similar) is that you can make it as fancy or as casual as you want! Obviously a black or solid colored one lends itself more easily to being dressed up than the striped t-shirt dress in this post. I added a statement necklace and my favorite espadrille wedges.
6. Graphic tees
Maybe this is technically more than one purchase, but J.Crew always has great graphic tees and this year was no exception! The pale blue SOHO tee is still available, thankfully, and then how cute is this LOVE option?
7. Anything striped
So again this is probably a category more than a single item, but you know I can’t resist some blue and white stripes! I may have chosen just two pictures, but trust me, there are many more. Ha! I love the 70s vibe of pairing the bell sleeve with flared jeans. The pictured tops are both sold out, but this option from Banana Republic is adorable too!
8. Chambray shirt
I bought two denim shirts this year, one short sleeved and one long sleeved. I love them both for different reasons! The fit of this Madewell shirt is my fave, but the long sleeve option from J.Crew works well for layering! You can see one of the ways that I styled the long sleeve one here.
9. Wedge sneakers
Funny story about these sneakers. They were in the display with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale shoes, but they weren’t actually on sale. I didn’t realize I until I got home, but they were just too dang cute to return. Whoops.
10. My favorite jeans, again
Don’t get me wrong, I love alllll the jeans. But I don’t think there’s another pair that I have purchased quite so many of. They wear out, and I replace them. They are that good! I’ve had different washes and hems, but the AG skinny is my current denim crush.
So there you have it, my favorite purchases in 2019. It will be interesting to see how many of these make their way into my 2020 list as well! What’s the best thing you bought last year? Let me know in the comments below!
