I had a different post planned for today, but this sudden transition to fall weather has me in the mood to write about (and wear) long cardigans! This is one of those trends that I was not on board with at first, and now I can’t get enough of them. I thought the look was a little silly on me, truthfully. However, I also used to wear a sweater set to work at least two days a week and now I wouldn’t be caught dead in one. At the time, though, sweater sets were everywhere. Trends are constantly changing! Usually, I end up jumping on board with the trends that are here to stay, as long as they work with my aesthetic and lifestyle. I think part of the reason I wasn’t sure about this particular trend originally is that long cardigans vary greatly in length. Although my legs are long, I have a fairly short torso, so some of the long cardigans I’ve tried in the past didn’t hit in the right spot.
My burgundy ribbed cardigan was a popular piece from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and it kept going in and out of stock. It is currently sold out, but there is another very similar one from the same brand, BP. I like the slightly turned back collar and the pockets. The ribbing adds visual interest, and this burgundy/plum color is everywhere this fall. Jewel tones tend to be flattering on just about everyone, and if you own a lot of neutral pieces of clothing, this is a fun way to add variety to your outfit. There is a longer, wider ribbed version here. And it’s on sale!
I purchased this orange open front cardigan from Old Navy, and as you can see, it also adds a pop of color to my look. I intentionally wore the same base outfit for each of these pictures so that it would be easy to see how the whole look changes when you trade out the sweater. This knit is not ribbed, and it doesn’t have the collar detail of the first one. Because this knit is smooth, I think it could lend itself to going with a dressier outfit if you needed it to, whereas the ribbed plum one reads more casual to me.
This boyfriend cardigan with buttons was my favorite of the two Old Navy options that I purchased. I love the buttons, the pockets, and the texture of the fabric. Because it is similar in color to the last cardigan, below, I think I would wear it more if it were a different color. I found a grey one in a boyfriend style at Loft, linked here. Grey is always a good neutral to own.
This last cardigan is a splurge item. I ordered it from Nordstrom this summer, fully intending to try it on and then return it. I realize that logic is ridiculous, and not surprisingly, it didn’t work. I have never put on a softer sweater! The day I got it, my son kept coming over and touching my arm because the material is so soft. It has the feel of loungewear without looking like loungewear. It reminds me of fabric they use for baby blankets. I remember thinking when I registered for baby gifts that the home and clothing industries were missing out on an opportunity to use such an amazing fabric for grown ups. Well, the folks at Barefoot Dreams figured it out, and I’m telling you, the results are amazing! They also make blankets out of the same fabric. I’ll just hand over my credit card now… If you do decide to splurge on this pretty cardigan, you will get your money’s worth, I promise. It will be like wearing a hug, all day long!

Thank you, is the color more of a brown or grey in person.?It looks more grey in the picture

It’s brown, but the brown has cooler undertones rather than warmer undertones, and it’s diluted of the way the fabric is heathered. The brown is mixed in with ivory. Here’s another pic of me wearing it from instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bmg6I1Th_4H/. I hope that helps!!

Thank you so much, it’s hard to choose a color online. I appreciate your help.

It totally is! Often I end up ordering more than one and then returning the ones I decide against. But that can be a hassle sometimes! Hope you enjoy your new sweater! 🙂
